How CalendarJack works

CalendarJack turns a GroupMe group's events into a calendar you can subscribe to. One person connects the group. Everyone else adds one link to the calendar app they already use.

Before you start

  • You need an invite code. CalendarJack is invite-only for now.
  • You must be a member of the GroupMe group you want to connect.
  • Keep your phone nearby. GroupMe texts you a PIN code to sign in.

Connect a group (organizer)

  1. Open calendarjack.com. Paste your invite code. Tap Connect GroupMe.
  2. You are sent to GroupMe. Sign in with your phone number or email and your password.
  3. GroupMe texts you a PIN code. Enter it.
  4. GroupMe asks you to allow CalendarJack. Allow it.
  5. Back on CalendarJack, confirm the account shown is yours.
  6. Pick the group. Tap Create calendar link.
  7. Copy the link and send it to the group.

Add the calendar (members)

Open the link the organizer sent. Then:

  • iPhone, iPad, or Mac: tap Add to Apple Calendar. Confirm the subscription.
  • Google Calendar: on a computer, open Google Calendar. Next to Other calendars, choose From URL. Paste the calendar address. Click Add calendar. It then appears in the Google Calendar app on your phone.
  • Outlook: open Calendar. Choose Add calendar, then Subscribe from web. Paste the address and save.

After it is set up

  • New and changed events appear on their own. Most calendar apps refresh every few hours.
  • Cancelled events drop off at the next refresh.
  • The calendar is read-only. Edit events in GroupMe.

Manage your calendars (organizer)

  • Turn off old link: makes a new private link and stops the old one. Use it if a link was shared by mistake.
  • Delete calendar: removes the calendar and its link for everyone.
  • Reconnect GroupMe: use this if a calendar says it needs attention.
  • Disconnect: deletes your token, every calendar, and cached events.

Trouble

  • No PIN code arrives from GroupMe. Wait a while and try once more. GroupMe limits how many PIN codes it sends in a short time.
  • GroupMe shows an error page. That page belongs to GroupMe. Wait and try again later.
  • A calendar says it needs attention. Tap Reconnect GroupMe on your calendars page.
  • Events look a few hours old. Your calendar app decides how often it refreshes. That is normal.
